Monitoring the EEG in Liver Disease

Abstract

The liver is the main and essential organ for the conversion of foodstuffs into forms suitable for use by the body. It functions also as the main organ for the detoxication of noxious by-products of metabolism, drugs and other poisonous substances absorbed from the bowel. Severe malfunction of the liver results in the accumulation of toxic substances in the blood which in turn have a profound effect on the brain leading to coma and eventual death. This sequence of events has largely common clinical features irrespective of the precise cause of the liver disease.
