Kinetics of Changes in PO2 and Extracellular Potassium Activity in Stimulated Rat Sympathetic Ganglia
Increase in metabolic rate during electrical activity has been recorded in various nervous tissue preparations yet measurements of oxygen uptake by isolated tissues have so far suffered from important time lags (Larrabee, 1958; Lipton, 1973) and therefore have not permitted analysis of transients. This paper describes PO2 changes recorded within tissue with fast responding microelect-rodes. A perfused preparation with relatively simple geometry was chosen to facilitate the interpretation in terms of oxygen consumption per unit volume (Q).
