For a perfect optical system as sketched in fig. 1 (which also defines the notations) the minimum distance of resolved bubbles can be written, according to the Rayleigh criterion,
$$R = \frac{{1.22\lambda p}}{a} = 1.22\lambda (m + 1)(f/a)$$
(λ being the wavelength of the light, we shall assume λ = 0.55 µm).
