Luminescence Polarization Investigation of the Structure of Doped Molecular Crystals

Abstract

An investigation was made of the spatial distribution of the polarization of the luminescence emitted by naphthalene and anthracene single crystals with one or two impurities, and also of the dependence of the polarization of the impurity luminescence on the polarization of the exciting radiation. This investigation yielded information on the orientation of the impurity molecules and on the nature of their incorporation in the host lattice. It was found that impurity molecules did not show a tendency to form pairs. The sensitivity of this method for investigating the structure of doped molecular crystals was five orders of magnitude higher than the sensitivity of the x-ray structure method.
