Abstract
Supersymmetry1 is among the best options for physics beyond the standard model. It has both “fundamental” and “pragmatic” motivations. The fundamental motivations are related to the general role of symmetries in field theory and to the connection of local supersymmetry2 to gravity. The pragmatic motivations depend upon the relevance of fundamental scalar fields in the present day description of particle physics.
