Geochronology and Zoogeographic Relationships of Miocene Hominoidea

The Miocene epoch, spanning 23.5–5 m.y.a., documents important changes in Earth history. The Eurasian and African chapters of the Miocene record have been particularly well developed during the last 10 years because of heightened interests in several subdisciplines of geology and paleontology. From these studies it has become increasingly apparent that there are complex interrelationships among Miocene global tectonics, paleogeographic factors, climatic change, shifting environments, and community evolution. Whereas patterns of evolutionary change during the Miocene were once generalized as marking a “modernization” of mammalian families (Osborn, 1910), the recent efforts of paleontologists, geophysicists, and geologists offer a more detailed unraveling of the natural history of this period.
