Direct Photons at Large PT from Hadronic Collisions: A Short Review Based on the QCD Analysis Beyond Leading Order

Abstract

Almost ten years ago it was stated in a paper by Halzen and Scott1 that “perturbative QCD predicts the observation of direct photons at large transverse momentum (PT)”. Indeed since then an impressive number of experiments2 confirmed the production of prompt photons in hadronic collisions. Especially for proton induced production one has to note the large coverage in √s(20 – 630GeV) and pT (5 – 80GeV/c). although the experiments are rather difficult because of the low rates, e.g. prompt photon/hadronic jet < α/α S .
