Computer Determination of Earthquake Epicenters

Abstract

This paper describes a method for determining epicenters on a general-purpose digital computer. The method is applicable when the initial approximation is unknown and some of the observations contain large errors (as is the case in seismological surveying). We judge from rather extensive experience with our program that when the necessary minimum quantity of data is available, failures (cases in which no solution is found) are very rare, and significant errors are virtually eliminated.
