Introduction: Noise in Our Overpolluted Environment

  • Joseph R. Anticaglia

The crescendo of noise in our environment is not just an isolated disturbance or nuisance. It can affect huge numbers of people, both physically and psychologically. For instance, 50 percent of the machines used in heavy industry may produce noise at levels that are potentially damaging to a worker’s hearing sensitivity. As many as 17 million men, by some estimates, are exposed to the harmful effects of excessive noise in their work environment.
