Abstract

The basic principles of external fixation still remain those outlined by the Lambotte brothers and Clayton Parkhill (1,2) at the beginning of the century although the technology of external fixators has changed a lot with time. The most important innovation came with the Ilizarov technique: with an only slightly invasive apparatus and the performance of a closed corticotomy, this technique is respectful of the biology of tissues (3).
