Applications of Nuclear Spectrometry in Crime Detection

Abstract

The technique of comparison of samples of physical evidence by activation analysis and nuclear spectrometry is becoming a powerful supplement to classical comparison methods. Nuclear spectrometry using NaI(Tl) or semiconductor gamma detectors or both has been applied to the determination of trace elements in hair specimens. The feasibility of attaining higher selectivity for certain isotopes by gamma-gamma and beta-gamma coincidence analysis has been evaluated. Studies of the physical effect of high-flux irradiations on hair specimens show that significant deterioration occurs at neutron fluxes of ~1013 neutrons/cm2-sec.
