Gas Chromatographic Methods for the Detailed Study of Controlled-Temperature Polymer Degradation

Abstract

A wide variety of methods have been suggested for the analysis of polymer pyrolyzates. In general, these techniques have gained wide acceptance for qualitative identification of homopolymers and copolymers and, in some instances, the quantitative determination of specific complex-polymer compositions. Attempts to apply these methods to the study of the product compositions produced from controlled- temperature polymer degradation have not been particularly successful. Variations in the state of the sample, quantity of sample, and method of heating and controlling the temperature have been examined in some detail in an effort to delineate the changes in these variables as a function of the volatile products produced on controlled-temperature pyrolyses.
