Elements of Foliation Theory

Abstract

In this chapter we introduce the basic notions that underlie the theory of foliations: projectable atlases, completely integrable distributions, leaves, transversals, holonomy. We give an elementary account that will be sufficient in order to understand the chapters that follow. For a more advanced treatment of these notions, the reader is referred to the texts that founded the theory, those of C.Ehresmann [Eh], G.Reeb [Re], and A.Haefliger [Ha]1 [Ha]2.
