Quadrupole Effects in the Lattice Parameters and Magnetic Ordering Temperatures of RECu2Si2, (RE=Rare Earth)

Abstract

For a number of reasons the physical properties of the RECu2Si2 intermetallic compounds have been studied rather thoroughly in the last few yearsl,2. Firstly this is the only series of compounds known to contain three members (RE=Ce, Eu and Yb) with unstable 4f shells (intermediate valence)2. Secondly the magnetic interaction temperatures are quite low, so that single ion effects can be studied with relatively little interference from ion-ion interactions. Thirdly the RECu2Si2 structure crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, i.e. in a noncubic structure, where one expects large anisotropies in the physical properties.
