Crystal Field Splitting and Thermal Expansion in Dilute Magnesium-Rare Earth Single Crystals

Abstract

Crystal field effects have been observed by Lüthi and Ott in the thermal expansion of both cubic rare earth compounds1 and hexagonal rare earth compounds.2 In the case of hexagonal compounds they were ascribed to the coupling between the strains and the quadrupolar operators of the magnetic ions only, while in the case of cubic symmetry, a coupling of the volume strain to crystal-field operators of fourth and sixth order was assumed.
