Anatomical Organization of Some Cholinergic Systems in the Mammalian Forebrain
Although acetylcholine (ACh) was one of the first neurotransmitters to be found in the central nervous system, knowledge concerning the anatomical organization of cholinergic neurons has lagged far behind other, much more recently identified types of neurons. For example, more is currently known about the anatomy of the multifarious peptidergic neurons than is understood about cholinergic neurons. The reason for this has been the absence of suitable techniques for mapping central cholinergic systems. Earlier attempts to trace central cholinergic systems using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry met with considerable skepticism when it became evident that some neurons that were certainly not cholinergic contained high levels of AChE activity (3,18,24). AChE activity therefore came to be considered an unreliable marker for cholinergic neurons.
