New Avenues in Electron Microscopy of Transmembranous Biomolecular Assemblies

A brief review of biological electron microscopy at molecular dimensions is given, with emphasis on recent advances in image processing. The advent of frozen-hydrated specimen preparation techniques has made possible the imaging of macromolecular assemblies, such as membrane transport and respiratory chain complexes, in their native state. Analytical techniques are now available which optimize the extraction of structural information from low dose images of ordered and disordered fields of biological macromolecules.
