Tritium Measurement Using Ionization Chambers
The detection and measurement of radiation by means of ionization chambers involves a very simple process. When radiation interacts with gaseous matter, ionization of the gas molecules occurs. If the ions or electrons so produced are collected on an insulated probe, the collected charge represents an electrical voltage or current. This voltage or current can then be measured by an electrometer, which is merely a sensitive voltage or current measuring device. If all the ions produced in a chamber of definite volume are collected on a probe, the current produced is directly proportional to the amount of radiation. In practice, it is easy to collect nearly all the ions produced by moderate to rather large amounts of radiation, so ion-chamber calibration curves are usually nearly straight lines [1, 2, 3].
