The mechanisms leading to the initiation of atherosclerosis are very complex. Since Duguid’s modification of Rokitansky’s theory, atherosclerosis has been related to thrombogenesis. Several investigators proposed the clumping of platelets to play a crucial role in the initiation of atheroma formation. When platelets are stimulated, they release polypeptide that is mitogenic to smooth muscle cells.
