A Study of the External Friction of Refractory Carbides at High Temperatures in Vacuo

The laws governing the external friction of TiC, ZrC, HfC, NbC, and TaC have been investigated from room temperature to 1800°C in a vacuum of 10–5 mm Hg. The coefficient of friction at first decreases and then increases sharply, beginning at a certain temperature in the range 950–1300°C which is characteristic of each carbide. The results obtained are interpreted in terms of both macro- and micro-factors. It is found that the higher the statistical weight of stable configurations (as regards energy) of the atoms of the components of the refractory carbide, the lower is its coefficient of friction.
