Development of Instrumentation for Surgery with Carbon Dioxide Lasers

The applications of lasers to medicine and surgery are based on the characteristics of laser devices and on the interactions that take place between electromagnetic energy and biological materials. Instruments using lasers to obtain desirable interactions with biological materials embody technical principles taken from such other fields as optics, electronics, mechanics. The integration of principles from a variety of disciplines into an instrument designed to perform prescribed functions is a classical engineering task. The specific form is determined by the bent of the individual designer. Here I have chosen for illustration only those instruments developed by my colleagues and me.
