So far, lasers in dermatological work have found use only for destroying and are used as an alternative to the scalpel or the electrocautery, or to freezing with CO2 snow or liquid N2. The ruby laser has been especially recommended for the surgery of the pigmented skin tumour, melanoma, because melanin absorbs the ruby wavelength rather well (see Goldman and Rockwell, 1973).
