Abstract

It will often be obvious to what group a particular pathogen or parasite belongs. However, it should be remembered that simply finding one of the biotic agents mentioned in this guide inside an insect does not necessarily mean that it is the cause of mortality. Many insects, nematodes, fungi, and bacteria are saprophytic and quickly invade an insect cadaver. Unless the agent is a known pathogen, Koch’s postulates (given in Techniques) should be followed to determine if the agent is indeed infectious.
