Abstract
In this long chapter, we shall describe and illustrate the principal methods and results that underlie local group-theoretic analysis. (We shall not attempt a systematic discussion of ordinary and modular character theory, but shall limit our comments on those techniques to the few specific places in the text in which they are needed.)
