Ionization Phenomena and the Determination of Electron Pressure
A necessary condition for the existence of the arc discharge is the partial ionization of the gas mixture in the discharge column. In the range of core temperatures at present under consideration, that is T = 4000–7000°K, about 0.01 per cent to about 0.1 per cent of all particles exist in the ionic form, so that the partial pressure of the electrons ranges from 10−4 to some 10−3 atm if the arc burns at atmospheric pressure.
