Abstract
Although the arc is the oldest example of an electric discharge that can be maintained for an arbitrary long time, the properties of chief interest for spectrochemistry bear a closer relation to the essential features of a furnace than to discharge phenomena. This fact, at first sight, is curious and will be examined in the following sections.
