Interaction of High Power Pulsed CO2 Lasers with Solid Targets

A brief survey of published experimental work is given of the production of plasma produced from solid targets by pulsed CO2 laser radiation. It is noted that at the highest laser powers presently available, experimental results are not consistent with existing theories. It is shown that three dimensional heat flow effects are important. The theory is modified to take these into account and reasonable agreement is found between the limited experimental data and the modified model.
