Austenitic Stainless Steel Alloys with High Nickel Contents in High Temperature Liquid Metal Systems

Abstract

The use of liquid sodium as a coolant for fast breeder reactors has been successfully demonstrated. More recently, further applications as heat transfer fluid have been considered for solar power plants and topping cycles in fossil fuelled power plants. From an economic and safety point of view, numerous studies focussed on materials compatibility with liquid sodium at high temperatures, thus resulting in a large data base on corrosion behaviour, change of mechanical properties and sodium chemistry. However, due to the number of parameters involved in liquid metal systems, a large scattering of these data is observed.
