Influence of Carbon Species in Sodium on The Methane Equilibrium

Abstract

The carbon present in sodium partially reacts with hydrogen to form methane. By use of a H2/Ar mixture flowing through the sodium, it was possible to substantially reduce the carbon content which reacts to form methane. The equilibration of hydrogen and methane partial pressures over sodium allowed to calculate the carbon activity which amounted to about 10-2 in the case of non-doped sodium. High methane partial pressures have been measured after Na2C2 addition to sodium at experimental temperature of 450 °C, for carbonate addition at 525 °C and for cyanide addition at 590 °C. The calculational basis assumes that monoatomic dissolved carbon determines the methane reaction. In some cases this leads to carbon activities of > 1. This indicates that the pjtethane is partially or completely formed by the metastable C2- 2 in sodium.
