Statics is a branch of Engineering Mechanics that deals with the effects and distribution of forces applied to rigid bodies that are at rest. A rigid body, whether a beam, truss, bolt, or shaft, is composed of elements of mass that are fixed in position relative to one another. All bodies will deform under load, to be sure, however, the study of Statics neglects these small deflections. Deflections of members are treated in the study of Mechanics of Materials.
