The molecules of liquid water, the details of their mutual interactions, and the nature of the kinetic and transport processes in which they are involved are all inaccessible to direct observation or measurement. As things now stand, moreover, there is no early prospect that theoretical calculations will be able to give us, independently, information about water that could substitute for experimental observation. Therefore, insofar as we wish to “understand” water in a molecular sense or “account for” the results of observations made upon it, we must resort to the consideration of hypothetical models.
