Psychogenic Hypertension: Experimental Review

Abstract

Exposure to environmental situations which are perceived as stressful can result in profound cardiovascular alterations. The relationship between such exposure and acute elevations in blood pressure and heart rate have been well documented. More problematic is the establishment of the relationship between repeated and/or prolonged exposure to stress and the pathogenesis of chronic hypertension. The purpose of this manuscript is the presentation of a series of fundamental experimental observations concerning this relationship. The authors are well aware of the difficulties associated with extrapolating data derived from laboratory studies in animals to the human condition. However, clinically oriented mental health professionals interested in the relationship between psychological functioning and hypertension should, at least in the authors’ opinion, be familiar with basic laboratory results.
