Theory of Capillary Chromatography

There is, in principle, no difference between the methods of classical gas chromatography and capillary chromatography. The fundamental features of the theory are the same for both variants. However, the different dimensions of capillary chromatography require some quantitative distinctions. The relatively high degree of simplicity and clarity of the processes and relationships in the capillary enable simplifications to be made, and show new possibilities for a theoretical treatment. This is the only thing which justifies a theoretical section in the present volume. Just as in Volume I, very simple mathematical tools are used to give a quantitative appreciation, and a feeling for the new range of sizes which prevails in capillary chromatography and which must be taken into account. The aim of this section is to indicate to the user the possibilities and methods of optimizing the operating conditions.
