There is a general public agreement that calculators will reduce number sense and computational skills. I do not know any research supporting that emotional statement, which is world-wide (USA, Canada, Russia, Europe, Asia, New Zealand). To give a fairer view of the problem, we first should analyze the role of the calculator and the role of checking in arithmetic (see Meissner, 1978).
