Laser Surface Melting of Metals and Alloys

Abstract

The use of laser irradiation to melt and rapidly self-quench metal surfaces has been extensively utilized as a research tool. The two principal objectives of this procedure have been to refine the scale of chemical inhomogenity, and/or to change the composition of a surface layer by material addition. In both cases, sufficiently rapid solidification rates occur (usually ≥  104 ‖ΨÅσµ το ρθοφξΨε {ετασταβωε σξθ~Ψε ωαυεθσ διτη φεσιθαβωε ρθορεθτιεσ~ →ηε ρθεσευτ στστξσ ο~ τηισ τεΨηυοωολυ ισ θε×ιεδεφ διτη ε{ρηασισ ου τηε ρηυσιΨαω {εταωωξθλυ ο~ τηε αωωουσ τοδηιΨη ιτ ηασ βεευ αρρωιεφ~
