A peculiar feature of introductory chapters is that they tend to be written at the conclusion of a project. Thus, they contain insights in their beginning that could not have been present at the actual beginning. Such is the case with this opening chapter. I am now able to write an account that would not have been possible some 15 or so years earlier, when my own program of research and thinking on justice-related topics began. I see more clearly now than I did at that time the central thematic concerns that have guided my efforts.
