Solubilization of Biologically Active Cell Surface Antigens

The importance of the plasma membrane in the maintenance and regulation of a cell’s physiological state, its interaction with other cells, and its antigenic individuality has been well established. In addition to acting as a protective barrier against toxic substances and regulating the intracellular ion balance, it has several functions of critical importance to cellular metabolism. Among these are the regulation of nutrient transport (Oxender, 1972), the interactions with polypeptide hormones that regulate certain intracellular events (Cuatrecasas, 1974), and a number of unique enzymatic activities (Coleman, 1973). The external surface of the plasma membrane also contains proteins that are responsible for the recognition of cells of the same type (Moscona, 1965).
