Abstract
In this chapter the author addresses the question of health promotion with particular reference to ill health caused by a Western lifestyle. Health promotion requires a combined social as well as a biomedical strategy. The author describes several examples in which health issues, teaching, and choice were part of a larger strategy in health promotion and risk reduction programs, resulting in behavioral change at an individual and community level (“empowerment”). Shortcomings in existing health services and public health policy that impede these changes are also discussed.
