Preface to Section I — Atmosphere and Basic Biological Dosimetry

  • John Calkins
Part of the NATO Conference Series book series (NATOCS, volume 7)

The antecedent of this monograph, the NATO Advanced Research Institute on the Role of Solar UV Radiation in Marine Ecosystems, was clearly not an assembly of scientists specializing in this particular corner of ecological science. A conscious attempt was made to bring together scientists whose investigations and disciplines are critical to the evaluation of solar UV action in the oceans. But few if any of the assembled scientists would consider themselves primarily concerned with the evaluation of solar UV effects in aquatic systems. Quantitative evaluation of the ecological role of sunlight must utilize a long chain of data and theories, most of which are, at first sight, not even remotely related to ecological systems.
