In preparing these introductory remarks to the discussion on chemical changes in the human artery wall with aging and with atherosclerosis I have made no attempt to provide a comprehensive review. Furthermore, I will talk primarily about lipids and touch only lightly on the connective tissue components, as these can be discussed much better by the experts on the panel. What I hope to do is to highlight some of the areas which I personally feel are particularly in need of discussion.
