There are a large number of proteins, both in the extracellular space and in intracellular membranes, which contain covalently bound carbohydrate. Of the various membranes in hepatocytes, the plasma membrane has been most extensively studied (1); but it has also been established that the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes (2), lysosomes (3), nuclear membranes (4), and microsomes (5) also contain glycoproteins.
