“All cells come with a sugar coating” is a brief and important summary of a very large body of biological experience. Most of this coating is in the form of glycoproteins. During the evolution of life the materials located on cell surfaces have assumed important functions in a variety of intercellular interactions. Hughes (1975) has recently reviewed some of these functions, including the role of glycoproteins as antigenic determinants, surface receptors and as elements of intercellular recognition and adhesion.
