Characterization of Carbonate Minerals in Oil Shales and Coals by Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract

The Bureau of Mines, US Department of the Interior, is conducting basic research on the minerals that are associated with oil shales and coals, our most abundant fossil fuel reserves. A knowledge of associated minerals will not only aid in developing methods for maximum recovery and utilization of these fuel resources, but may contribute toward profitable utilization of the minerals themselves. The carbonate minerals are of particular interest in these studies. Some that occur in oil shale beds are not only abundant, but potentially valuable. The carbonate minerals occurring in coal play a significant role in many of its uses. For example, carbonate minerals have been shown to increase the retention of sulfur during coal combustion,(1,2) and hence are of interest in air pollution research.
