The Nature of Computer Life

  • Geoff L. Simons

The idea that computers can be seen as emerging life-forms is not new. It is a commonplace in fiction and fancy, at least in the modern age. What is new is that now the idea can be fleshed out as a coherent doctrine, gaining immense weight through consideration of the proliferating computers and computer-based systems based in the world. The rich fertility of modern technology is yielding artificial systems that may reasonably be regarded as alive. This dramatic and unprecedented circumstance accords with what people have imagined throughout history.
