Abstract
Nitrate utilization by higher plants involves nitrate uptake from the medium, its reduction to ammonia, either in the roots or in the leaves, and incorporation of the generated ammonia into carbon skeletons for the synthesis of amino acids and other organic nitrogen compounds.
