Abstract

Some of the experimental programs realized at CIRIL in collaboration with many experimental groups are reviewed. They concern two fields of physics:
  • Solid-state physics: how is the large amount of energy deposited during the slowing down of a swift heavy ion in matter converted into the form of lattice defects or structural modifications?

  • Atomic physics: what are the elementary phenomena of the interaction between swift heavy ions and target electrons?
