Abstract

The great fluctuations in abundance of stocks of fishes and shellfishes have concerned fishermen for a long time. They have contrasted the relative regularity in position and time of capture with the variability in quantities caught, and wondered about the reasons. Since the earliest days of fishery research, scientists have speculated on ways of forecasting the runs. But our knowledge is relatively limited, and much of it is subjective.
