Inter-American Tropical Tuna Convention
Tunas were not regarded highly as food fishes in the United States until about 1903, when albacore were first canned commercially in California. Consumer acceptance was low at first, but the fishery gradually expanded, and by 1914 annual landings in the United States were about 9,000 tons. In 1916 a poor albacore catch caused an increase in the canning of skipjack and yellowfin tuna. By 1918, 77 percent of the total pack was yellowfin and skipjack.
