Applications of normal sampling theory; significance tests
A typical practical problem is this: It is desired to ascertain whether a dye affects the breaking strength of a type of cotton sewing thread. The breaking strength of a number of standard lengths of the dyed thread and a number of lengths of the undyed thread are measured. There will almost certainly be some difference between the mean strengths of the dyed and the undyed thread. But there is so much variability in cotton that the mean strengths of two samples of undyed thread will be different.
