Zhong Jia-Qing1 was born on December 4, 1937, in Anhui Province, which lies in the east coastal region of China. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack in the early morning of April 12, 1987, in New York while he was a visiting professor at Columbia University. He is survived by his wife, Wu Mei-Juan, who is a professor of physics at Qinghua University in Beijing, a daughter Zhong Wen (born 1967), and a son Zhong Ning (born 1970).
